South Korea's SK Telecom Co. disclosed its cutting-edge analytics solution and simulator specifically geared for urban air mobility (UAM) communication networks on Thursday.

The system employs drones that mimic the real-world communication settings of UAM vehicles. These drones are capable of flying at altitudes of 300 to 600 meters and at cruising speeds of 100 to 150 km/h.

The aerial vehicles will gather data across a variety of air routes, including urban, suburban, and popular tourist locations, providing real-time quality assessments of the aerial communication network.

Equipped with specialized analytic tools, the system offers real-time data visualizations through maps, graphs, and charts.

Furthermore, the technology incorporates real-world scenarios where UAM passengers might be using smart devices for making calls, streaming videos, or engaging in social media. This allows SK Telecom to conduct comprehensive evaluations of aerial network quality.

In addition to the analytics platform, the company has developed an aerial network communication quality prediction simulator that considers a range of factors affecting communication quality, such as flight path, antenna height, and beam angles.

This tool aids in making more accurate investment decisions and optimal network designs.

The announcement comes on the heels of SK Telecom's $100 million investment in Joby Aviation, a US UAM manufacturer, with whom talks of mutual collaboration are ongoing.
