SK On Co., a battery affiliate of South Korea's SK Group, announced on Wednesday that it has signed a technology transfer agreement with the US-based Solid Power at the CES 2024, the world's largest consumer electronics and technology exhibition held in Las Vegas on Jan. 10.

Under this agreement, SK On will utilize Solid Power's technology related to solid-state battery cell design and pilot line processes for research and development.

As part of the collaboration, SK On plans to establish a solid-state battery pilot line at its Daejeon battery research center by 2025.

Leveraging Solid Power's sulfide-based solid electrolyte and cell technology with its expertise, SK On aims to develop solid-state batteries with significantly enhanced lifespan and energy density.

Following the development of solid-state batteries, both companies plan to continue their collaboration for commercialization.

SK On had previously invested $30 million in Solid Power in 2021 and agreed to jointly develop next-generation solid-state batteries. The specific details of their ongoing cooperation have been under discussion since then.
