LAS VEGAS – Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. will unveil a sample of an ultra-compact all-solid-state battery within the year for mass production in 2026 and expects to start producing glass substrates for semiconductor packaging after 2027, said its Chief Executive Chang Duckhyun.

Last year, Samsung announced the development of the all-solid-state battery tailored to wearable devices, which boasts a high energy density comparable to that of lithium-ion batteries. Its prototype is under evaluation by customers.

Regarding glass substrates, Chang said in a press conference: “We’ll send its sample to two to three customers within the year.”

The company showcased its first glass substrate with large-area bending characteristics last September.

Glass substrates use glass materials instead of silicon and organic materials. They require no interposer to connect semiconductor chips and the substrate, or a mainboard, enabling ultra-thin chip packaging.

SILICON CAPACITORS

Samsung, a leader in the multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) market, will also mass-produce silicon capacitors tailored to artificial intelligence servers within the year, Chang added.

Silicon capacitors use thin-film semiconductor technology. They feature stronger temperature stability and higher capacitance in a thinner form factor than existing MLCCs

“Within the next one to two years, we’ll generate more than 100 billion won ($69 million) from silicon capacitors in sales,” Chang noted.

In 2023, its revenue stood at 9 trillion won.
