LG Uplus Corp., a South Korean internet service provider, said on Tuesday that it has installed its 5G mobile backup network system in the cloud computing platform of Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide stable access to the mobile network even during a natural disaster such as an earthquake or fire.

LG teamed up with AWS and Samsung Electronics Co. to build the software based on the cloud-native technologies used to manage network traffic. The backup software was tested by Samsung’s user plane function (UPF) device, a core 5G infrastructure system.

Cloud-native network technologies allow for changing the relevant infrastructure components without difficulty to scale services and meet customer needs. They also automate app management.

Particularly, the backup system will solve communication problems caused by a natural disaster or increased traffic.

The software development will allow LG Uplus’ customers to access more than 200 cloud services provided by AWS such as machine learning and data analysis.

In March, LG Uplus signed an agreement with AWS to cooperate in developing cloud networking technologies. Both companies are now working on building network applications based on the AWS cloud computing platform.
