S.Korean public sector's ICT systems to fully convert to cloud

South Korea’s public sector, barring extenuating circumstances, will build its information and communications (ICT) systems in private clouds to prevent inefficiency stemming from the use of separate servers and solutions by each government institution.

The Presidential Committee on the Digital Platform Government on Tuesday said it discussed this plan at its fourth plenary meeting held at Government Complex Seoul. The main topic was the public sector’s adoption of cloud native, referring to the use of cloud technology from the design stage to ensure seamless services.

By next year, the committee will provide standards and guidelines to promote cloud native and pursue pilot projects. Priority will go to the use of private software as a service to optimize every agency’s ICT system for the cloud environment.

“Barring extenuating circumstances when building or upgrading ICT systems, we will pursue annual expansion based on the basic principle of cloud native application,” a committee source said.

The plan is to focus on the conversion project of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety through 2025 and streamline it afterwards through full-scale transformation at individual institutions.
