Hyundai Engineering Co. said on Tuesday it has obtained both domestic and foreign quality certifications to start the nuclear power plant EPC (design, procurement, and construction) work.

The construction arm of South Korea's Hyundai Motor Group received Korea Electric Power Industry Code (KEPIC) certification from the Korea Electric Association (KEA) in November last year.

KEPIC certification is a qualification system created to ensure the safety and reliability of electric power facilities, especially nuclear power plants.

It also acquired three nuclear power plant-related certificates of authorization from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), which are for field installation and shop assembly, parts and piping subassembly manufacturing, and supports manufacturing.

ASME nuclear power certification is a strict technical certification system and is essential to winning and carrying out overseas nuclear projects.

"We expect that these certificates will help us to accelerate micro modular reactor (MMR) and small modular reactor (SMR) businesses we have been fostering as a new strategic project," a Hyundai Engineering official said.
