South Korea’s sports car enthusiasts now have one more supercar option to enjoy at an affordable price – one that is arguably as powerful as the likes of Lamborghini, Porsche and Ferrari.

According to Kia Corp., the EV6 GT, which is the fastest passenger car ever produced in Korea, will be available in the domestic market from next week.

Based on Hyundai Motor Group’s proprietary Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the sporty version of Kia’s first all-electric EV6 crossover comes with a 77.4 kWh battery pack and can travel up to 342 kilometers on a single charge.

Optimized for performance, the electric vehicle has a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrain that delivers power to all four wheels.

The Kia EV6 GT accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.4 seconds, with a top speed of 161 mph.

In independent testing performed by leading third-party organization AMCI earlier this year, the EV6 GT accelerated faster than the Ferrari Roma and the Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder RWD, according to Kia.

“The arrival in Korea of the EV6 GT, the most powerful Kia vehicle yet produced, solidifies our place among the fastest and most sophisticated players,” the company said.

TO COMPETE WITH TESLA MODEL Y

Kia said the EV6 GT will be priced at 72 million won ($50,056) after tax breaks in Korea.

Like all EV6 models, the EV6 GT is part of Kia’s “Plan S” strategy to launch at least two battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) a year and build a full lineup of 14 BEVs by 2027.

Charging up its battery will take less time than many of Kia’s rivals. The company said its E-GMP cars support fast charging, with an 80% charge from empty possible in just 18 minutes.

Kia unveiled the EV6, its first dedicated electric vehicle built on the E-GMP platform, in March of last year amid intensifying competition among global automakers to go eco-friendly.

In the Korean market, the EV6 will compete with Tesla’s Model Y, which was introduced to Korea in January 2021.
