Samsung Electronics Co. and Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) will jointly develop human resources to advance motor technology, the core of home appliances.

Samsung Electronics on Wednesday said it signed an agreement with GIST, located in the nation's sixth-largest city of Gwangju, to set up the Intelligent Motor Track. Set to launch next year, this recruitment-linked course grants a master's degree under the goal of producing 15 graduates every year.

Graduates of the course will work for Samsung Electronics and receive tuition support and related subsidies during the school year. Opportunities to join company internships and famous overseas conferences are also included.

Motors are key components that improve energy efficiency, strengthen durability, and ensure low vibration and noise in home appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators and air conditioners.

The sci-tech school's departments of mechanical engineering and electrical and computer engineering and GIST Graduate AI (Artificial Intelligence) School cooperated to devise the track's curriculum. The course will provide convergence education and research that organically link software such as signal processing, mechanical engineering such as dynamics, control and design, and AI-related fields.

"To help the development of motor technology and industry to innovate home appliances, we will continue active industry-academia cooperation," said Lee Moo-hyung, Samsung Electronics executive vice president and head of the company's R&D Team at the Digital Appliances Division.
