South Korea's major power plant builder Doosan Enerbility Co. announced on Tuesday that it has won a contract for a fuel conversion project at a thermal power plant in Chile, commissioned by the Chilean subsidiary of private power company Engie SA.

This project involves converting the fuel of Chile's 375 MW Infraestructura Energenica Mejillones (IEM) power plant from coal to natural gas.

Doosan Enerbility plans to supply and install its proprietary burners and auxiliary facilities at the power plant to convert it into a natural gas power plant that produces the same amount of power as the existing plant.

The IEM power plant will operate similarly until 2025 to Chile's environmental regulations and Engie Group's carbon neutrality policy. After six months of construction, the plant is expected to reduce its carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions by approximately 40% and 70%, respectively.

Last year, Doosan Enerbility signed a memorandum of understanding with three Vietnamese power operators to promote eco-friendly fuel conversion projects.
