Korea's Hanmi Semiconductor releases new glass micro saw

Firm says it has invented the world's first all-in-one machine to saw lenses, filters and glass by using a loader and chuck table

Hanmi Semiconductor Co., South Korea’s leading chip equipment maker, has launched a ‘full automation glass micro saw' dubbed GL2101 and began sales of the product to global clients, the Kospi-listed company said on Aug. 16.

The new product represents the world's first all-in-one machine that saws lenses, filters and glass for electronic devices, using a loader and chuck table, the company said.

By reducing cutting time, the equipment increases productivity and saves costs compared with other machines, the Korean manufacturer added.

The company boasts the No. 1 spot in the global semiconductor packaging process industry from 2004 to 2021. Among its 320 global customers are Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. (ASE), a chipmaking services provider, and Amkor Technology Inc., a semiconductor packaging, design and test services provider.

Hanmi Semiconductor is poised to expand its business to the entire range of semiconductor processes through investments in HPSP Co., a leading annealing semiconductor equipment maker in Korea.

Hanmi is HPSP’s second-largest shareholder, with a 25% stake. Posting a 49% operating profit last year, HSPS listed on the Kosdaq, Korea's secondary bourse, in July.

Hanmi Semiconductor's reputation in the global semiconductor industry is growing. It ranked as one the world’s top 10 chip fabrication machine makers, according to a survey by microchip industry research firm TechInsights Inc. in May.  

The sole Korean firm picked by the survey, it was selected alongside Netherlands-based ASML Holding N.V., Japan’s Advantest Corp., Applied Materials Inc. of the US, and Singapore’s ASM Pacific Technology Ltd.
