Com2uS enters JV to create webtoon based on popular game Summoners War

South Korean game developer Com2uS Corp. is expanding its footprint in the storytelling and webtoon industry by setting up a joint venture with leading domestic webtoon production company Kenaz, according to Com2uS on May. 7.

The newly established JV, Jungle Studio, will focus on content creation such as webtoon and web novels. alongside building an intellectual property (IP) portfolio that includes Com2uS game IPs as well as original IPs.

In the first quarter of 2022, Jungle Studio plans to roll out webtoons based on Com2uS' games, including the popular hit Summoners War, which reported over 2 trillion won ($1.8 billion) in sales when it launched in 2014.

In addition to webtoons, the company will offer an extensive worldview of Summoners War via original content materials such as web novels. Com2uS will also push to gamify Jungle Studio's content to boost its IP operations.

Through the JV, Com2uS will be able to foray into the webtoon industry and secure a rich content network. Com2uS and Kenaz will hold a 56% stake and a 44% stake in the JV, respectively.

Meanwhile, Lee Woo-jae, the chief executive of Kenaz, is set to spearhead Jungle Studio given his expertise in content production. Founded in 2018, Kenaz houses around 200 webtoon artists and has produced hundreds of webtoons across a wide range of genres.
