LG Electronics Inc., a leading South Korean home appliance maker, has received ISO certification for its automotive chip development process, including the design and safety verification of key components for vehicles.

LG said on Monday it recently received ISO 26262 from TUV Rheinland, an authorized German testing and certification agency.

The certification is an international standard for automotive safety established by the ISO to prevent accidents caused by system errors of electric and electronic devices mounted on vehicles.

With the certification, LG said it has established an authorized vehicle semiconductor development process for electronic control unit (ECU), microcontroller unit (MCU) and power management integrated circuit (PMIC) chips.

In particular, LG has been recognized for its ability to develop auto parts with the highest automotive safety integrity level, or ASIL, D grade defined in ISO 26262, which enables the company to design and verify all kinds of chips from grade A to D.

Depending on the severity, frequency and controllability of accidents, ASIL is classified into four levels with D the highest. At grade D, an auto system can limit malfunctions or failures that can lead to an accident to just one occasion over 100 million hours.

LG Electronics said it eventually aims to turn its entire automotive parts business into an in-house department.

In May last year, LG Electronics was also certified by TUV Rheinland for its vehicle media parts such as advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) camera and infotainment system.
