South Korea’s top auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis Co. will showcase its latest electric vehicle-related technology at this year’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) to be held in Detroit from Sept.14-25.

At the NAIAS, also known as the Detroit Auto Show, the auto parts-making unit of Hyundai Motor Group will unveil about 30 technologies in the future mobility sector that can be applied to electric vehicles for mass production.

The company is participating in the US auto show for the first time. The Detroit exhibition is being resumed after a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hyundai Mobis, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor Co., said it will feature various next-generation technologies, including its electric Complete Chassis Platform Module (eCCPM) for electric vehicles.

The platform, optimized for electric vehicles, combines braking, steering, suspension, driving and battery systems in an aluminum frame that can be freely adjusted in size.

Since the platform can be adjusted according to the size of vehicles, it is suitable for purpose-built vehicles (PBVs), it said.

Recently, carmakers such as General Motors (GM), Ford, and Stellantis are developing their own PBVs to enter the fast-growing market.

The company will also showcase the LED lighting grille it developed last year.

The new grille technology allows drivers to use the front grille of their cars as a lighting device and a means of communication with automobiles and pedestrians, according to Hyundai Mobis.

LOOK FOR NEW BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

The North American market is one of Hyundai Mobis’ key global markets.

Of the company’s global order target of $3.75 billion this year, about 45% comes from the North American market.

The company's North American orders have grown from $660 million in 2020 to $1.4 billion in 2021 and $1.7 billion in the first half of this year.

“The North American market is a battlefield for future mobility, including electric vehicles and autonomous cars. We’re looking for new business opportunities at this year’s Detroit Auto Show,” said Axel Maschka, vice president of Hyundai Mobis’ global sales division.

Hyundai Mobis, which supplies parts to affiliates Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp. as well as other global carmakers, has been strengthening its technological capabilities in electrification, autonomous vehicle and connected car segments to serve the diversified needs of automakers, while also looking into the urban air mobility (UAM) and robotics sectors.

The company said in February it will spend up to 8 trillion won ($6.7 billion) over the next three years on its future growth drivers such as auto chips, robotics and urban air mobility.

At the Detroit Auto Show, Hyundai Mobis is planning to hold a media conference on Sept. 14 to unveil its strategy for the North American market.
