Samsung Electronics Co. on Tuesday unveiled its latest image sensor, the ISOCELL HP2, with improved pixel technology, which is widely expected to power the main camera on its soon-to-be-launched Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone.

The 200-megapixel image sensor boosts capacity for maximum pixel performance, allowing for detailed and seamless photographs in any lighting conditions, the South Korean tech giant said.

With the ISOCELL HP2 image sensor, Samsung said it expects to enable smartphone photographers to take photos with higher resolution and better image quality in challenging environments.

When shooting at the full 200-megapixel resolution, Samsung uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology to render the finest detail, it said.

The product is already in mass production.

CUTTING-EDGE TECH FOR EPIC DETAILS

“The Samsung ISOCELL HP2 harnesses our company’s high-resolution image sensor technologies and know-how at the cutting edge for epic detail,” said Yim Joon-seo, executive vice president of the Sensor Business Team at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung said the latest image sensor will be used for its flagship smartphones without identifying specific models. But Industry officials said the new image sensor will power the main camera on the company’s flagship Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone, likely to debut in early February.

The new image sensor uses a technology called dual voltage transfer Gate (D-VTG) – the industry’s first to do so – to give each pixel 33% greater ability to gather light, which improves image quality in dim environments.

The ISOCELL HP2 image sensor supports 8K resolution at 30 frames per second and 4K at 60 frames per second, according to Samsung.
