Hyundai Steel has joined hands with the construction industry to increase the recycling of steel byproducts.

On Tuesday, the steel maker organized a symposium on low-carbon construction materials using steel byproducts at COEX in Seoul's Gangnam district, in conjunction with the Slag Concrete Committee under the Korea Concrete Institute.

The objective of the symposium was to highlight the current status of steel byproducts recycling technology and offer opportunities for companies to participate actively in recycling. Over 200 people attended the event, including officials from construction companies that use steel byproducts as construction materials, academic organizations and associations.

In his welcome speech, Kim Hyung-jin, head of Hyundai Steel's Process Research Center, emphasized the increasing demand for construction aggregate, coupled with the gradual depletion of natural aggregate. He noted that reusing steel byproducts for construction materials is vital for resource recycling and carbon neutrality, contributing to a sustainable society.

At the symposium, six organizations, including Hyundai Steel, Korea Institute of Ceramic Engineering and Technology, POSCO Engineering & Construction, Korea Expressway Corporation Research Institute, Kongju National University and Hyundai Engineering & Construction, presented technical papers on expanding slag recycling.
