South Korea's steelmaker POSCO on Sunday said its P-Box Column, the method of building a concrete-filled synthesized column jointly developed with POSCO E&C, has obtained a green technology certification from the government.

The certification is for technology that saves energy and resources and reduces greenhouse gas or pollutant emissions throughout the process of social and economic activities. P-Box Column on Wednesday received the mark from a government deliberation committee for the task comprising related public agencies.

The technology produces columns by cold forming POSCO’s high-performance steel, more than doubling compressive strength through the synthesizing effect of concrete and steel. Construction of a building applying this method emits considerably less environmental pollution than the use of reinforced concrete.

The company said the reductions are 53% in waste volume, 59% in waste disposal costs and 47% in CO2 emissions.

POSCO Group affiliate POSCO E&C is applying its eco-friendly method to building spaces at underground parking lots of apartment complexes. The builder has finished three sites using about 1,900 tons of steel including The Sharp Central City apartments in Seoul's Cheonho-dong neighborhood.
