South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering & Construction (E&C) has joined a post-war reconstruction project in Ukraine to expand the nation’s main airport near the capital Kyiv.

The company on Friday said it signed an agreement to that end with Boryspil International Airport at Hotel InterContinental Warsaw in Warsaw, Poland. The signing ceremony was attended by Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong, International Contractors Association of Korea Chairman Park Sun-ho, Hyundai E&C President Yoon Young-joon and the airport’s director general Oleksiy Dubrevskyy.

Located about 29 km southeast of downtown Kyiv, Boryspil is the largest airport in Ukraine with 62% of passenger traffic and 85% of cargo. Airport authorities are conducting feasibility studies on modernizing the runway and building a new cargo terminal after the war with Russia ends.

For the project, Hyundai E&C will use its technology accumulated through domestic and global ventures like at Incheon International Airport, Singapore Changi Airport and the under-construction Chinchero International Airport in Peru.

“Hyundai E&C is reviewing opportunities to take part in all fields where it can use its know-how accumulated from the history of South Korea’s reconstruction for Ukraine’s speedy post-war recovery," CEO Yoon said. “We will cooperate in developing Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as well as transportation like airports and railways.”
