South Korea's LG Uplus Corp. announced on Monday that it has introduced eco-friendly packaging materials for its network equipment to reduce carbon emissions.

The company has been using polyethylene foam and petroleum-based buffer materials to deliver network equipment to installation sites.

LG Uplus aims to practice environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management by introducing eco-friendly network equipment packaging materials in collaboration with suppliers from this year.

The company plans to use paper cushioning and straps for wireless access network equipment packaging, both of which are 100% recyclable, minimizing the volume while adequately protecting the equipment.

For wired subscriber network equipment, such as L2 and L3 switches and optical modems, LG Uplus has replaced conventional polyethylene foam with air cushions and paper.

Optical modems installed in homes now feature a QR code for instructional videos instead of printed manuals on paper. The packaging boxes will include a statement: "This package uses recyclable paper."

The annual carbon emissions reduction achieved by introducing eco-friendly packaging for wired and wireless network equipment amounts to 11 tons, equivalent to planting over 1,700 pine trees, according to the explanation.
