LG Display Co., the world’s leading organic light-emitting display (OLED) maker in South Korea, will showcase its premium OLED gaming panel series powered by the industry’s fastest refresh rate for the first time at the upcoming world’s biggest electronics trade show CES next week.

The Korean display major partially owned by LG Electronics Inc. announced on Thursday that it has developed a 480Hz OLED display technology for gaming monitors, the first of its kind in the display industry.

The refresh rate of 480Hz means that 480 images are generated per second, which is the fastest monitor refresh rate in the industry, said the company. The higher the refresh rate, the smoother and clearer the screen transitions.

The company plans to premiere the full lineup of the 480Hz gaming OLED monitors in 27, 31.5, 34, 39 and 45 inches at CES 2024, which will be held in Las Vegas from Jan. 9 to 12.

The 27-inch 480Hz QHD gaming OLED display will first hit the market by the end of June of this year.

GROWING RIVALRY IN THE GAMING MONITOR MARKET

Global display majors, including LG Display and its crosstown rival Samsung Display Co. as well as Taiwan-based ASUS and Japanese Sony, are vying for leadership in the premium gaming monitor market, which is rapidly expanding amid the burgeoning gaming market.

With the advent of gaming platforms, including the billion-dollar e-sports industry, the gaming hardware-producing market is also rapidly expanding.

Samsung Electronics Co. on Wednesday also unveiled its new OLED gaming monitor series, the expanded lineup of its Odyssey gaming monitors. Samsung Electronics is the parent company of Samsung Display and the latter's major customer.

Samsung will also display its premium gaming monitors at CES 2024, and the fastest refresh rate of its premium Odyssey gaming monitor series is 360Hz.

LG Display’s 480Hz QHD gaming OLED monitors are supported by an immersive 2,560 x 1,440 resolution and a 0.03 milliseconds response time, according to the company.

Thanks to the company’s so-called META Technology, which incorporates the microlens array technology, LG Display’s new high-end monitor boasts enhanced image quality with maximized emission of organic light and minimized external light reflections during darker scenes, it claimed.

LG Display also said its new gaming OLED emits the lowest level of blue light in the industry, about half the amount emitted by premium liquid crystal displays (LCDs).

Earlier this week, the company also announced a plan to showcase next-generation automotive display products at CES 2024.
