A team from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has won the Quadruped Robot Challenge of the UK, easily beating models from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Carnegie Mellon University of the US.

South Korea's top tech school on Tuesday said Urban Robotics Lab, led by professor Hyun Myung from KAIST's School of Electrical Engineering, won the event at this year’s Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' International Conference on Robotics and Automation in London running from May 29 to Friday.

The team's artificial intelligence-based self-walking robot DreamWaQ received an overall score of 246, over four times that of runner-up MIT with 60.

The scoring was based on how a robot moved in five sections, including terrain simulating sandy and muddy conditions. DreamWaQ also boasted superior speed in completing all five in 41 minutes 52 seconds, with the average of the other teams being 49 minutes.
