South Korea's SK Ecoplant will supply solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) for the power supply system of a data center to be built in Singapore by GDS, China's largest data center development and operation company.

The company announced on Monday that it had won the project to supply and install fuel cells for the data center being developed by GDS in Singapore. This order was secured based on the agreement for developing a fuel cell-integrated data center signed between SK Ecoplant and GDS in August last year. GDS, headquartered in Shanghai, owns over 100 data centers.

SK Ecoplant is responsible for the entire engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) work for the fuel cell package. This marks the first application of SOFC in the Singapore data center.

The SOFC supplied in this project is a third-generation fuel cell, boasting the highest power generation efficiency among existing fuel cell technologies. It can efficiently produce power even in limited spaces and is capable of 24-hour power generation regardless of seasons or weather conditions.

"With experience gained in power supply solutions based on fuel cell technology, ranging from small- to large-scale applications like data centers and hospitals, we will accelerate our efforts in capturing the commercial market," said Park Kyung-il, CEO of SK Ecoplant.
