Samsung Electronics Co. announced on Wednesday that it has signed a business agreement with Japanese mobile communications company KDDI to jointly develop 5G network slicing.

Network slicing is a technology that divides a single physical mobile communications network into multiple independent virtual networks. It can simultaneously provide customized communications for various services, such as low-latency networks required for autonomous driving and high-speed, high-definition sports telecasts.

The two companies demonstrated 5G network slicing for the first time in the world in 2020. Earlier this year, they successfully verified the network slicing technology using the RAN Intelligent Controller in a commercial 5G standalone mode network environment in downtown Tokyo, Japan.

Through the latest business agreement, they plan to collaborate on new 5G business models and the development of various commercial services that leverage network slicing technology.
