South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co. and Doosan Robotics Inc. have jointly launched an artificial intelligence-powered barista, SK Group's telecom unit said on Jan. 26.

SK Telecom developed AI, big data and security technology for the robot, while Doosan was responsible for the hardware of the machine, which can make various types of coffee, fruit drinks and dairy beverages.

The robot can tailor each cup of coffee according to individual preference. It also has the technology to close the disposable cup lids for the first time in Korea’s coffee market, SK Telecom said.

The AI-powered barista also provides analysis of sales data, such as revenue and food stocks, and monitors the robot's condition. SK Telecom will launch an application for the robot's operation and offer a security service option through closed-circuit television.

The robot will significantly reduce labor costs in cafés, SK Telecom said.

The SK Group's telecom unit is in talks with major café brands in Korea to expand sales of the robots, aiming for the top spot in the Korean coffee robot market.
