South Korea's Doosan Enerbility Co. on Sunday said it signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday with 10 domestic companies and universities at Doosan Tower in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, on the development and verification of domestically developed hydrogen turbine technology.

The 10 entities are Doosan Enerbility, Korea Southern Power (KOSPO), E1 Corp., Seoul National University, Inha University, Hongik University, Incheon National University, Gangneung-Wonju National University, Hanul Aerospace and Machinery, and Samwon Engineering.

Under this agreement, the 10 will cooperate in participation in a verification project for a 150 mw-class gas turbine using 50% hydrogen in combustion, development and production of hydrogen combustors based on domestic technology, and output and supply of clean hydrogen. KOSPO will provide and run the verification site and Doosan Enerbility will develop combustors and commercialize ammonia cracking technology with E1 to supply clean hydrogen.

Gas turbines that use liquefied natural gas (LNG) for fuel can be converted into hydrogen turbines through modification and application of hydrogen combustion technology. Combining 50% hydrogen in a hydrogen turbine can reduce carbon emissions up to 23% more than conventional gas turbines using LNG for power.

Developing the world's fifth gas turbine for power generation in 2019, Doosan Enerbility last year held a successful test-firing of a hydrogen turbine combustor using 30% hydrogen. A national project is now simultaneously developing 50% hydrogen mixed- and 100% hydrogen-fired combustors.
