Carbon neutrality

South Korea’s SK Siltron on Sunday said it procured 19.5% of the electricity it used last year from renewable energy.

“In 2020, we were the first Korean company to participate in RE100 (a campaign for converting 100% of electricity used into renewable energy by 2050) and have since seen results from our efforts,” a company source said.

Switching to renewable energy slashes greenhouse gas emissions. Most of SK Siltron’s emissions come from power consumption for wafer manufacturing, and if renewable energy is adopted for the process, the company is expected to speed up its attainment of carbon neutrality.

The company also purchases a green premium every year to accelerate its eco-friendly energy transition. This system considers companies to have used renewable energy if they pay an additional fee on top of their electricity bills.

The company is also directly reducing CO2 emissions through an energy management system used at all of its business sites.

In recognition of its achievements, SK Siltron on April 10 received the highest grade of “Leadership A” in the climate change response category from the Carbon Disclosure Project, a multinational agency for sustainability evaluation.
