South Korea's KT Corp. on Tuesday said it developed a small cell gateway with partner and tech startup Eluon.

The small cell gateway is a system that interlocks signals from small base stations with a mobile communications network to boost network data capacity in areas with no or weak signals.

Developed by KT, this gateway can simultaneously handle up to 100,000 stations and be applied to 5G mobile communications service with no need to replace stations.

The company will adopt the gateway on-site next month.

"Conventional foreign-made equipment cannot provide domestically specialized functions such as text alerts for disasters, so service expansion is limited," a KT source said. "We will replace all foreign equipment with domestic items and support Eluon's global expansion."
